About Huchuy Picchu Mountain
Huchuy Picchu Mountain is a peak next to the archaeological place of Machu Picchu at 2,497 meters above sea level, not more than 50 meters higher than the ancient city. In fact, the name Huchuy Picchu in the native language of Quechua means “small mountain”. And although being small, an exciting adventure of one hour of hiking to the top of this mountain awaits.
The Huchuy Picchu Hike was recently opened by the authorities. Before, it was part of the hiking trail to Huayna Picchu, but the Huchuy Picchu Hike is worth wandering the one kilometer rocks path constructed by the Incas to get to the top and enjoy the fantastic panoramic view of the ancient city that Huchuy Picchu Mountain guards.
The entry to the Huchuy Picchu Hike, located north of the Inca citadel, is available with a combined ticket: ‘Machupicchu + Huchuy Picchu’.
1.- Already feel like doing the Huchuy Picchu Hike?
This route is a great complement given the required Huchuy Picchu difficulty level and time. This route starts on the same flat path that takes to Huayna Picchu, but then a detour of stone stairs needs to be taken to continue going through the way to the top. The Huchuy Picchu difficulty remains on the various stone stairs and a few stone paths that the Incas built at the end of the XV century.
The preparation for this short Huchuy Picchu hike is not extreme. The fascination about this hike is that although it is brief, it is primarily steep stairs to one of the most amazing views above Machu Picchu and the Urubamba river landscapes.
On a moderate pace, completing the hike takes, on average, the way to the top, about one hour; on the way back, about 30 minutes are necessary to descend those same stone stairs. People of all ages are welcome to enjoy the track.
Therefore, the Huchuy Picchu difficulty is neither too scary nor dangerous.
